Arizona State basketball signs JUCO point guard Alonzo Verge

The Arizona State Sun Devils officially added another talented guard to a 2019 recruiting class that already includes four-star commit Jaelen House.

Alonzo Verge, a 6-foot-3 combo guard from Moberly Area Community College, officially signed on Wednesday to join head coach Bobby Hurley’s program in Tempe.

Through 25 games in his sophomore season, Verge put up 20.8 points per game on 55.8 percent shooting from the field along with 6.1 assists and 4.1 rebounds per contest. Verge was named an NJCAA All-American for his efforts in leading the Greyhounds to victory in 88 percent of his games played last year.

Verge scored a career-high 55 points in a 106-65 victory over Kennedy King College on Nov. 9. He used his physicality and IQ to push the ball in transition and create shots for himself and others by drawing the attention of multiple defenders and making smart reads.

For Hurley, Verge brings another dimension to a backcourt that’s coping with the graduation of their guard trio of Tra Holder, Shannon Evans II and Kodi Justice. Luckily for him, freshman shooting guard Luguentz Dort has come out of the gates hot, averaging 20.5 points and 2.3 steals in 33.3 minutes per night.

As a junior, Verge will likely have to play behind point guard Remy Martin, who leads Arizona State in assists per game with five per night. Martin has taken a step forward as a distributor now that the Sun Devils have put together a consistent nine-man rotation.

The Sun Devils, assuming everyone returns, will have a deep backcourt rotation between Martin, House and guard Rob Edwards, who has only played one game so far this season. With his new rotation of dynamic guards, Hurley will have plenty of tools to work with going forward.
