Arizona game-winning FG attempt just wide as ASU takes Territorial Cup

Nov 24, 2018, 6:01 PM | Updated: 6:40 pm

Arizona Wildcats kicker Josh Pollack drilled four field goals in the Territorial Cup match up against Arizona State.

His fifth attempt of the day sailed wide, giving the Sun Devils a 41-40 victory in Tucson and effectively ending the Wildcats season.

The kicker was a perfect four-for-four on field goals and two-for-two on extra points on the afternoon, but couldn’t drill the 48-yarder with 11 seconds remaining, which would have given Arizona the win.

Arizona came into the fourth quarter with a 19-point lead over the Sun Devils. Two Arizona turnovers and four scores by the ASU offense gave the Sun Devils the lead for good with 3:08 left in the game.

Arizona scored four touchdowns on the day but only attempted two extra points. Twice head coach Kevin Sumlin decided to attempt two point conversions and Arizona State’s defense held on both.

Pollack hit field goals of 29, 23, 36 and 40 yards on the day. The potential game winner was a 48-yard attempt and sailed wide, giving ASU the ball back and the win.

The Arizona offense gained 54-yards in 2:52 to set up the 48-yard attempt.
