The Arizona Diamondbacks discussed an extension with former first baseman Paul Goldschmidt last spring, according to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro.

Per Gambadoro, the D-backs discuss extensions with the appropriate players each spring. That included Goldschmidt before the start of last season, who was entering the second-to-last year of his five-year, $32 million extension.

Goldschmidt was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday for three prospects and a draft pick. The final year of his contract for the 2019 season is on a salary of $14.5 million.

Starting pitcher Zack Greinke ($31.5 million) and outfielder Yasmany Tomas ($15.5 million) both have hefty contracts for next season while starting pitcher Patrick Corbin reportedly agreed to a deal with the Washington Nationals and outfielder A.J. Pollock remains a free agent.

Goldschmidt, 31, is widely regarded as one of the D-backs’ best-ever players. He has made six straight All-Star games since 2013, won three Gold Gloves and finished in the top-3 of MVP voting on three separate occasions.

After a poor start to the season, Goldschmidt recovered last year to a .290 batting average for 33 home runs and 93 RBI.
