Arizona State true freshman linebacker Merlin Robertson was named to the Football Writers Association of America’s 2018 Freshman All-America team.
Robertson, a true freshman in 2018, was one of several true freshman starters on ASU’s defense and had a standout season in his first year.
He was also Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and named to the Freshman All-America teams released by 247Sports and The Athletic.
He is one of two players in the Pac-12 to appear on the FWAA’s All-America team, joining Stanford’s Paulson Adebo.
Robertson led ASU in tackles (77), tackles for loss (8.5) and sacks (5) and also had an interception, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He led all FBS freshmen in defensive stops with 35 and led Pac-12 freshmen with 25 QB pressures. He also played the most snaps among Pac-12 true freshmen with 749.
The Gardena, Calif. native was part of an ASU defense that ranked 68th in the country in 2018 after finishing 107th the year before.
