Arizona State football running backs coach and assistant head coach John Simon will leave the Sun Devils to take a job as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Memphis, according to multiple reports.

One of the reports, 247Sports’ Sun Devil Source, said that Simon’s eventual goal is to become a head coach.

“I just felt it was the best course of action to further my personal growth as a coach,” Simon told Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman. “I want to be able to eventually be an offensive coordinator so that I can be a head coach.

“I’m not leaving for more money or anything like that. I’ve loved coaching at Arizona State and working for Herm Edwards and with Rob Likens and everyone else on the staff.”

Simon will work under Memphis head coach Mike Norvell, who was previously the offensive coordinator at Arizona State.

In 2018, Simon was in his third season as the running backs coach at ASU and coached players like Kalen Ballage, who now plays for the Miami Dolphins; and Eno Benjamin, who had a breakout season in 2018 and had nearly 2,000 yards from scrimmage in 13 games.
