Phil Mickelson not immune to the WMPO boo birds at No. 16

Phil Mickelson, the son of Arizona.

Lefty is revered in the Valley as one of the all-time greats in the Arizona sports scene, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t susceptible to the rowdiness that is the 16th hole at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Especially when he misses the green.

The chants of “Phil” quickly turned to boos as the pro hit the front edge of the green before rolling off.

It would get worse before it would get better for the ASU alum.

Starting his round on the back nine, the par 3 was his seventh hole of the day.

While the occasional golfer is still warming up by that point, it was rare sight to see Mickelson duff a chip, a shot that is the golfer’s bread and butter.

But in classic Phil fashion, he made up for the poor second shot with a near-par save from the greenside bunker.

The crowd — finally — showed the usual Arizona love for Lefty after the shot.

It was a rough stretch for Mickelson to close out his first nine holes of the day. In addition to his bogey on No. 16, Mickelson had two more bogeys near the end of the first nine, No. 15 and No. 17, respectively.

He did turn it up on the 18th, though, as he dropped in a birdie to bring him back to two over on the day and one under for the tournament.

The good news? Lefty got the hole over with before the party really got going at No. 16.
