The Phoenix Suns waived guard Wayne Ellington one day after acquiring him, the team announced Thursday.

98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro first reported the news.

Ellington was traded by the Miami Heat along with Tyler Johnson to the Suns on Wednesday in exchange for Ryan Anderson.

The 31-year-old shooting guard had a no-trade clause in his deal with Miami that he waived with the expectation he will join a playoff contender, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Suns are Ellington’s eighth NBA team. The 28th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Ellington is known for his shooting. He is a career 38 percent 3-point shooter.

With the Suns waiving Ellington, their roster stands at 15 players, including two-way contracts Jawun Evans and George King.

Ellington is the latest player on an expiring contract waived by the Suns this year, joining Los Angeles Lakers center Tyson Chandler and Houston Rockets guard Austin Rivers.

The acquisition of Ellington and Johnson was the only move the Suns made the week of the NBA’s trade deadline, which passed at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
