SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Diamondbacks outfielder Jarrod Dyson will undergo an MRI after experiencing “a little bit of discomfort in his midsection,” manager Torey Lovullo said Monday.

Lovullo said he is not overly concerned and the team is simply playing it safe just days into spring training.

Dyson is being counted upon for the 2019 season as infielder Ketel Marte begins his foray as an outfielder and after Arizona lost center fielder A.J. Pollock to the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency.

But Dyson has a recent history of muscle injuries. He is coming off a lower core injury suffered on July 4 that led to a failed rehab assignment in September. Prior to that, he underwent season-ending sports hernia surgery in September of 2017.

The latest discomfort is “nothing related to his lower core injury,” Lovullo said Monday, before Arizona’s third game of the spring. “At this point, much like Matt Koch, we’re not going to force anybody to do anything. We want to take care of these guys right now. We pulled (Dyson) back, we’re going to slow him down.”

Koch was scratched from a projected Saturday start due to arm fatigue.

Regarding Dyson, Lovullo said he isn’t concerned about the D-backs’ center field depth.

“My gut feel is — from what I’ve been told — is it’s not going to be anything that’s going to cause us to miss significant time with him,” the manager said.

Arizona started Marte in center field on Monday for his first game at the position with ace Zack Greinke pitching.

Socrates Brito and Abraham Almonte started in center field in the Diamondbacks’ first two spring games.
