Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald surprises 12-year-old fan battling rare disease

Feb 28, 2019, 8:23 AM

They don’t call him “Larry Legend” for nothing.

Longtime Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald took some time to surprise a young Cardinals fan facing a rare disease, and the interaction was captured in a video the Cardinals released on Tuesday.

Caleb, a 12-year-old Cardinals fan, lost his mother last year to a rare neurodegenerative disease called Machado-Joseph disease. Shortly before his mother’s passing, Caleb began showing signs of the disease as well.

Fitzgerald decided to treat Caleb to a fun day at Dave and Buster’s and gave him a memory he will enjoy for life.

“It was really rewarding,” Fitzgerald said in the video the Cardinals posted on their social media. “The only thing I’m sad about is he had to skip school to do it.”

Fitzgerald said the Dave and Buster’s establishment opened early so the two could spend time there alone.

“As things progress with Caleb, he’ll just have something really cool to look back on and remember and dream about again,” said Janey Pearl Starks, a family friend. “He’ll be smiling for a long time based off what happened this morning.”
