Arizona State freshman guard Luguentz Dort was named the Pac-12’s Freshman of the Year on Monday.
Dort averaged 14.9 points in conference play, 12th-best in the conference while shooting 43 percent and getting to the foul line 5.2 times per game. He also averaged 1.6 steals per Pac-12 game.
In addition to the award, Dort was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team, the defensive team and the conference’s list of the five best freshmen. He’s only the second freshman in conference history to be named to the All-Conference and All-Defensive teams.
Dort is the fifth Sun Devil to ever win the award. Jahii Carson was the last winner in 2013. Ike Diogu took the honor in 2003, Jamal Faulkner in 1991 and Byron Scott in 1980.
Dort and Arizona State have a big week ahead of them with Pac-12 Tournament play beginning for them on Thursday. ASU will play the winner of UCLA and Stanford at 6 p.m. on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
