Former Arizona Cardinals safety Antoine Beathea, whom the team released on Friday, is expected to sign with the New York Giants, as reported Tuesday by former Colts receiver Reggie Wayne and confirmed by SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano.
The team parted ways with Bethea, along with quarterback Mike Glennon, last week, prior to the start of NFL free agency. The Cardinals added safety D.J. Swearinger in December off waivers from the Washington Redskins, and Budda Baker could slide to a safety spot with the departures of Bethea and free agent Tre Boston.
Bethea, 34, started all 16 games for the Cardinals last year and made four passes defensed with a forced fumble, three sacks, 121 tackles (five for loss) and six QB hits.
In his 13 seasons in the NFL so far, Bethea has played 16 games nine times and 13 or more games in all but one season (2015).
He has made the Pro Bowl three times and won a Super Bowl with the Colts.
Bethea will reportedly join a Giants defense led by defensive coordinator James Bettcher, who held the same title in Arizona under Bruce Arians. The Giants are expected to lose safety Landon Collins after he reportedly agreed to join the Redskins.
