The penalty kill has been a friend to the Arizona Coyotes this season.

On Thursday against the Florida Panthers, they put their shorthanded prowess in the record books.

The Coyotes set a franchise record for shorthanded goals in a season when Michael Grabner scored on a breakaway in the first period.

The goal was the Coyotes’ 16th on the penalty kill this season. It was the sixth for Grabner, which was a single-season individual franchise record.

The 16 shorthanded goals overtook the previous mark set by the Winnipeg Jets in 1988-89.

Grabner’s goal was the first of the night for the Coyotes, who are chasing a playoff spot in the final month of the season.
