It’s still Opening Day, but Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Lorenzo Cain is already in midseason form.

He made an early play-of-the-year entry with a leaping catch at the wall to rob a potentially game-tying home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning on Thursday.

In doing so, the Brewers got the Opening Day win over a division foe in the St. Louis Cardinals and spoiled first baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s debut on his new team.

The Brewers won 5-4. In addition to Cain’s heroics, reigning MVP Christian Yelich hit a three-run home run and Josh Hader got a two-inning save.

Cain, a two-time All-Star, has long been considered one of the top defenders in the league. Despite never winning a Gold Glove, he is a three-time American League Wilson Defensive Player of the Year and has the seventh-best defensive WAR among all active players.

He’s also a threat on offense. Over the last five years, Cain has batted .301 with 55 total home runs and has stolen more than 25 bases four times.

Now in his second year with the Brewers, he’ll look to keep making game-changing plays and help them fight to reach the postseason for the second year in a row.
