Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Jake Lamb exited Wednesday’s matinee game in San Diego with an apparent injury to his lower body.

Manager Torey Lovullo, while speaking to reporters as seen on FOX Sports Arizona, described the injury as a left quad strain. Lovullo said Lamb was likely to undergo an MRI on Thursday.

“I think we can categorize that as more than a cramp,” Lovullo said.

Lamb roped an extra-based hit into right field but went down by the time he reached second. After staying face-down in the dirt for a moment, he exited the playing surface on his own power. Starting pitcher Luke Weaver came in to pinch-run. Weaver did not score, and the D-backs lost 4-1.

Lamb exited a spring training game this year with back tightness but returned to playing action only days later. He also missed a significant chunk of the 2018 season after requiring shoulder surgery.

The 2019 season figures to be a big one for Lamb, who was an All-Star in 2017 but hit .222 in 56 games in 2018. He hit .170 against left-handed pitching. He also was making a switch to first base in the absence of Paul Goldschmidt, although Lamb played third base on Wednesday.

As for other injuries, the D-backs already lost outfielder Steven Souza Jr. for the year right before the start of the season after Souza incurred significant structural damage in his knee. Silvino Bracho is also out for the season after having Tommy John surgery, while starting pitcher Taijuan Walker is recovering from that same procedure. T.J. McFarland remains out with a shoulder injury.
