Coyotes forward Brad Richardson is a good quote. Win or lose, game day or off day, he seems to always have something candid to say, avoiding common hockey cliches.

For that, and for his generosity with his time for media, Richardson was awarded the first ever Shane Doan Good Guy Award, voted on and presented by the Arizona Chapter of the Pro Hockey Writers Association.

Doan, the former Coyotes forward and captain, was on hand to present the award as well.

Doan was known for not only his on-ice play in 21 seasons with the Coyotes and Jets but also for his respect and compassion toward others. It’s for that reason that the new award is named after Doan.

Coincidentally, Doan and Richardson are former teammates.

Media that voted on the award included 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Matt Layman, The Athletic’s Craig Morgan and Cat Silverman, The Arizona Republic’s Rick Morin, ArizonaCoyotes.com’s Dave Vest and NHL.com’s Alan Robinson, formerly of the Associated Press.

Richardson had a big season on the ice, as well, co-leading the Coyotes in goals with 19, three of which were shorthanded. His 19 goals and 15:58 average ice time were both career highs in his age 34 season.
