98.7 FM roundtable: What should the Cardinals do at No. 1?

Apr 24, 2019, 3:06 PM | Updated: 8:31 pm

The Arizona Cardinals have the No. 1 pick and with that comes infinite speculation about what the Cardinals should, could, might, want to and will do.

But no speculation has been more prolific than the guess that Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman winner Kyler Murray will go No. 1 overall to the Cardinals, marking the second year in a row that they will have drafted a quarterback with their top pick.

Is that the right move?

We asked the 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station voices and ArizonaSports.com editors two questions on draft week after months of speculation: What will the Cardinals do, and what should the Cardinals do with the first pick?

You can find their predictions about what they will do here. Below, you’ll find what each believes the Cardinals should do.

Doug Franz, co-host of Doug & Wolf

The Cardinals should: Trade down, as long as they stay in the top-four. Since there’s no way to guarantee that the 49ers, Jets or Raiders are interested in making a trade, they should draft Quinnen Williams at one.

Ron Wolfley, co-host of Doug & Wolf

The Cardinals will: Trade down. I think the Cardinals are going to trade out of the No. 1 spot for a boatload of picks and stay with Josh Rosen as their QB.

The Cardinals should: See above!

Paul Calvisi, anchor for Doug & Wolf

The Cardinals should: Draft Kyler Murray, the future of football. Just ask defensive coordinators how much sleep they’ll get while game-planning for a Russell Wilson with elite speed and escape ability.

Luke Lapinski, host of The Rundown with Luke Lapinski

The Cardinals should: Trade the pick. I wouldn’t just give it away if I don’t get a good offer, but this team has a lot of needs to address. And quarterback might not even be one of them.

Dave Burns, co-host of Burns & Gambo

The Cardinals should: Trade down. That point of view is dependent on a marketplace to do that, and I can’t say with certainty if there is one. Too many holes to fill and drafting QBs in back-to-back years seems wasteful.

John Gambadoro, co-host of Burns & Gambo

The Cardinals should: Draft Kyler Murray. I’ll give a slight lean toward taking Murray over trading the pick. I would love to see them get numerous picks for that first pick but if this kid is really that special I don’t want them to miss out on the possibility of a generational type of quarterback.

Jordan Byrd, producer of Burns & Gambo

The Cardinals should: Trade down. Find that trade partner that wants Murray, ideally some team like Oakland, and trade No. 1 for multiple first-round picks to help plug the many holes that are on the Arizona roster.

Kellan Olson, reporter and editor

The Cardinals should: Draft Kyler Murray, but are we confident enough that Josh Rosen isn’t as good as Murray is?

Matt Layman, reporter and editor

The Cardinals should: Trade down. This is the way to go to maximize the value of that pick. Taking another quarterback doesn’t make sense.

Kevin Zimmerman, reporter and editor

The Cardinals should: Call the Oakland Raiders when they’re on the clock. Rosen is plenty capable of running Kliff Kingsbury’s offense, and no other team can give Arizona multiple 2019 first-round picks than the one led by a coach-GM combo that just might want to do something crazy. The Cardinals would still get a potential star at No. 4 in that scenario, too.

Vince Marotta, Co-host of Bickley & Marotta

The Cardinals should: Trade the pick. I know that’s easier said than done, and I know the Raiders have a new front office regime, but they can be fleeced again, can’t they? I’d love to see Arizona trade down to four, pick up an extra pick or two and still be guaranteed to get a stud defensive player like Quinnen Williams (I know he’ll probably be gone), Josh Allen, Ed Oliver or Devin White.
