Jon Duplantier was optioned back to Triple-A Reno following a three-inning relief appearance against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. In a corresponding move, the D-backs called up right-hander Jimmie Sherfy, the team announced Monday.

Sherfy, 27, has made 26 MLB appearances in the regular season prior to this year. He owns a 1.00 ERA in that time, and this season in Reno, he has pitched 13.2 innings with a 1.32 ERA and seven saves.

“Bullpen coverage,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said about Sherfy being called up. “We’re going to put him back there in length if needed, a couple innings. I know he’s been throwing the ball extremely well, and he’s been here once before and it was very similar. We didn’t use him.

“It’s my job if I can to get him in the game. I’m anxious to see what he can do. I know he’s been having a good year.”

He gives the D-backs a fresh arm in the bullpen after Duplantier pitched multiple innings of relief on Sunday.

Duplantier came in for the third inning in relief of starting pitcher Zack Godley on Sunday and gave up three runs. After the rough third, he settled down and put out six of the next seven batters, allowing just an infield single to Dansby Swanson in the fifth.

The rookie pitcher earned his first major league win on Thursday against the Braves, striking out two batters in one inning of a 10-inning ball game to start the series.

He has made four appearances for Arizona this season with a 12:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 12.0 innings pitched.
