Luke Weaver worked another quality start against the San Diego Padres on Monday.

The fourth-year pitcher threw six innings and gave up just two earned runs on four hits, no walks and seven strikeouts.

He also added a highlight-reel play on defense in the first inning.

Weaver retired 10-straight Padres hitters before giving up three consecutive hits, including a go-ahead, 2-run homerun to Franmil Reyes in the sixth.

Before the Padres rally, Weaver had retired 17 of 18 batters faced.

Weaver’s quality start came at a crucial time for the D-backs, who used all eight relievers on the 25-man roster in the previous two games against the San Francisco Giants.

He has been a nice surprise in the fourth spot of the D-backs rotation this season throwing a quality start in six of his 10 appearances. He has thrown a quality start in all four of his appearances in May.

His 3.14 ERA is second on the team among starting pitchers, trailing only Zack Greinke. Weaver’s seven strikeouts against the Padres moved him into a tie with Greinke for second on the team with 62 on the season.

Weaver is enjoying career best marks in ERA and WHIP.
