D-backs’ Zack Greinke reaches 2,500 career strikeouts

Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke reached a career milestone against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night: his 2,500th career strikeout.

The feat came in the bottom of the fourth inning after the right-hander fanned Padres outfielder Franmil Reyes.

Greinke becomes just the 37th pitcher to join the exclusive 2,500 career strikeouts club.

Arizona’s ace finished the night with five strikeouts, putting him at 2,502 career strikeouts which ranks 36th all-time and fourth amongst active pitchers behind C.C. Sabathia, Justin Verlander and former D-back Max Scherzer.

Unfortunately for the D-backs, the 35-year-old’s four hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts in seven innings pitched were not good enough to get the win as Arizona fell to the Padres, 3-2.

Greinke now has 67 strikeouts on the year after striking out 215 and 199 batters the last two seasons.

And since 2008, Arizona’s ace has had less than 150 strikeouts in a season just twice (2013 and 2016).

At that pace, the right-hander could finish the 2019 campaign with the 26th-most strikeouts of all-time by passing Tom Glavine’s 2,607 career strikeouts.
