By the numbers: Diamondbacks erupt offensively in sweep of Giants

Talk about a get-right series.

After struggling to find success at the plate in their last four outings, scoring just seven runs combined, the Arizona Diamondbacks turned it on against the San Francisco Giants.

Earning the series sweep, the offense came alive even without two productive bats in the lineup in David Peralta and Wilmer Flores.

Here’s a look at some of the numbers that stood out over the weekend:

After a total of seven runs crossed the plate in the four games prior, the D-backs exploded in the Bay Area, recording 34 runs over the three-game span.

It was a record-setting effort as the team matched a franchise mark it had originally set at home in September of 2016 against the Colorado Rockies.

But that’s not all.

The D-backs also set a new franchise record for runs scored in a three-game road series. The previous record (32) was set in June of 2014 against the Rockies.

Arizona’s lowest amount of runs scored over the weekend was six. Before the series, the D-backs hadn’t scored at least six runs since May 17 when they shutout the Giants 7-0.

You can’t score the runs without getting the hits.

The D-backs were aggressive over the weekend, posting 43 hits.

Game 1 of the series saw almost half of the D-backs’ hits as the team compiled 21.

Game 3 proved to be the worst hitting performance of the series, but even then, the D-backs still reached double digits with 10 hits.

The series opener on Friday provided a lot of fireworks for the D-backs offense.

Out of the nine innings played, the D-backs failed to score at least a run in just two of them.

As the game progressed, the bats continued to heat up.

After scoring a run in the first, the D-backs added two apiece in the second and third innings.

They weren’t done there, however, as Arizona manufactured three runs in each of the next three innings before a huge seventh saw four runs cross the plate.

Game 1’s hitting barrage was highlighted by Ildemaro Vargas’ five-hit outing.

On just his third pitch of the game, the infielder went yard, giving the D-backs an early 1-0 lead.

He followed that up in the second inning with an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2 following the Giants’ two-run first.

Vargas’ third hit came in the fifth inning, moving Ketel Marte over to second with a single. They wouldn’t wait long to get back to the dugout as Adam Jones cleared the bases with a three-run blast. The D-backs took an 11-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Vargas reached base on a single before crossing the plate following an Eduardo Escobar three-run homer to push the score to 14-2.

He ended the night with a single in the seventh.

All told, Vargas went 5-6 from the plate, recording a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.

In the two games played over the weekend, Vargas averaged .545 from the plate, with six hits, a home run and four RBI. He also posted a .545 OBP and scored five runs.

The swirling bay winds were no match for the D-backs’ long ball.

In the three games against the Giants, Arizona accounted for six homers, three of which resulted in multiple runs scored.

Marte had the farthest hit HR with a 436-foot blast to right field on Sunday. Jones wasn’t far behind with a 419-foot homer in Game 1 of the series.

Marte also had the hardest hit ball of the series, crushing his Saturday home run with an exit velocity of 113.9 mph. It’s the fourth-hardest hit HR by a D-backs player in the Statcast Era (since 2015).

Marte proved to be the most consistent over the course of the weekend for the D-backs.

His seven hits were tied for first among the team with shortstop Nick Ahmed, while the second baseman added a home run in each of the three games.

Marte finished the series 7 for 15 with three homers, a triple and six RBI.

He’s now up to 12 home runs on the season, tied for first on the team with Escobar.
