Starting pitcher Luke Weaver was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Arizona Diamondbacks with what the team has diagnosed as a right forearm strain.

Weaver exited his Sunday start in the sixth inning with right forearm tightness. He allowed just one earned run on six hits, while striking out six and walking two in the win.

“He is going to be getting a second opinion, I don’t know who that’s going to be right now at this point,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo told reporters after the team’s 4-3 loss to the Rockies on Monday. “Once we determine what that second opinion gives us, I’ll give you guys more details.

“We’re remaining hopeful that everything will point in a very, very positive direction.”

In a corresponding move, Jimmie Sherfy was recalled from Triple-A Reno, the team announced on Monday.

The trip to the IL for Weaver now leaves another hole in the D-backs rotation, although Taylor Clarke is expected to start on Thursday for the D-backs at Coors Field against the Rockies.

Zack Greinke, Merrill Kelly and Robbie Ray are scheduled to start the first three games of the four-game series in Colorado.

The D-backs have not announced a starting pitcher for the first game of a weekend homestand against the New York Mets beginning on Friday.

Sherfy has appeared in four games for the D-backs this season posting a 1.08 ERA in 8.1 innings pitched. He’s posted a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 8:1.

Weaver was enjoying the best season of his four-year career in the majors so far. In 11 starts for Arizona in 2019, the 25-year-old posted a 4-3 record with a 3.03 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 68 strikeouts.
