The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Kevin Cron from Triple-A Reno on Saturday and have placed utility player Blake Swihart on the 10-day injured list due to a strained right oblique.
Cron, 26, is being recalled to the team just one day after being optioned to Reno for pitcher Jon Duplantier.
The 26-year-old has a .231 (3-for-13) batting average, two RBI and three doubles in seven career games with the D-backs in 2019.
He made his Major League debut on May 24 in an 18-2 win over the San Francisco Giants.
Cron’s call up comes as no surprise. The infielder has been raking it for Reno this year.
He has a .339/.437/.800 slash line that includes 13 doubles and 21 home runs to go along with 62 RBI and 27 walks.
His home run and RBI totals led the entire minor leagues prior to his first game in a D-backs uniform.
Cron is a Valley native who attended Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix where he was named the 2011 Arizona Player of the Year, Gatorade High School Player of the Year and was named to the USA Today All-USA High School Baseball Team.
He would go on to play at Texas Christian University and was drafted by Arizona in the 14th round of the 2014 draft.
Cron also owns the Arizona high school records for home runs in a single-season (27 in 2011) and in a career (60).
But Kevin Cron isn’t the only member of the Cron family in the Diamondbacks’ organization or MLB.
His brother, C.J., is an infielder for the Minnesota Twins and his father, Chris, is the manager of the Reno Aces.
Chris Cron was also able to be the one to tell his son that his dream of becoming a Major League Baseball player had come true.
Swihart has only been able to muster three home runs and nine RBI in his 30 appearances for the D-backs this season.
