Wide receiver Trent Sherfield went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft after four years at Vanderbilt.

In his time at Vanderbilt, he had nine touchdowns in 48 games and 136 receptions for 1,869 yards.

Once no one drafted Sherfield, he visited the Arizona Cardinals to see if it was the right place for him. It turned out it was.

Entering his second year with the Cardinals, Sherfield said on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Bickley & Marotta that he is starting to get more comfortable with the offense as the pace of the game slows down for him.

In his rookie year, Sherfield had one touchdown and 210 yards all in the final seven games of the season.

Sherfield wasn’t recruited to Vanderbilt as a wide receiver.

“I got recruited to go to Vanderbilt as a DB,” Sherfield said. “So I’ve only been playing wide receiver for about four years in a true wide receiver spot.”

Sherfield’s journey to the NFL has not been easy as he had to learn how to run routes on his own, trying to catch up without much experience in that role.

After a coaching overhaul this offseason, Sherfield thinks the new staff has made a big difference for him and the rest of the receivers.

Kliff Kingsbury was hired as the next head coach and the Cardinals appointed former Green Bay Packers coach David Raih as their wide receivers coach. Former Cardinals wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan was also brought in to help out during OTAs.

“This year is going to be very special for the guys that are going to be out there,” Sherfield said in regard to the wide receiver group. “Now that we have coach Sullivan and coach Raih, we are actually learning to run routes the right way.”

Sherfield waited much of last season to get his opportunity and said it is important this year to continue what he was doing in the last seven games.

“As the year went along, I got my shot and I just made my opportunity count,” he said. “Looking this year to continue to build off of that.”
