Arizona State University’s journalism school is getting on the train.

The school announced Thursday that head football coach Herm Edwards would join the faculty at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, becoming a professor of practice. A release from the school said he will serve as a guest lecturer in classes and “conduct regular discussions on sports and the media at Cronkite.”

Edwards, entering his second season as the coach of ASU football, worked at ESPN from 2009 to 2017 previously. He appeared on SportsCenter, NFL Live, ESPN Radio and the network’s Super Bowl coverage.

“Coach Edwards has deep professional experiences in sports media, serving as an on-air analyst and commentator for ESPN,” Cronkite Dean Christopher Callahan said in the release. “Our students, particularly our growing cadre of sports journalism students, will benefit greatly from his expertise in both worlds.”

Edwards was named the Super 11 Coach of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America this year, which honors a coach who helps journalists cover the team.

“I am humbled and honored by this incredible opportunity,” Edwards said in the release. “As coaches, we are teachers first and foremost. I am looking forward to sharing the knowledge I have accumulated as a player, coach and member of the working media with the students at the Cronkite School.”

The Cronkite School is located in downtown Phoenix, and its students regularly cover the school’s collegiate athletics as part of classes, internships and on-campus media outlets.
