Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche was arrested in Scottsdale for misdemeanor traffic offenses and a misdemeanor warrant from another jurisdiction on June 6.
The arrest was for speeding and driving on a suspended license, per a police report from Scottsdale Police Department.
Police found a white powdery substance in the center console of Nkemdiche’s car, where a credit card holder resided. The substance was not tested and was impounded with Nkemdiche’s approval.
“Based on the totality of the circumstances, it was decided not to pursue testing of the credit card holder in lieu of impounding the item for destruction with Robert’s cooperation,” the police report stated.
The Cardinals provided the following statement:
We are aware of the June 6th incident involving Robert Nkemdiche. We have alerted the NFL office in accordance with the league’s personal conduct policy and will comment further when appropriate.
Near Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard, Nkemdiche was stopped at roughly 6:30 a.m. and told police he was on his way to a 7 a.m. practice.
Nkemdiche was reportedly going 75 MPH in a 45 MPH zone when he was pulled over, according to police. He had a previous warrant for driving on a suspended license and not appearing for the said court hearing.
The 24-year-old was the Cardinals’ first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, selected 29th overall. He has largely disappointed through three seasons, totaling 4.5 sacks, all of which came last year. Nkemdiche is coming off a torn ACL suffered in Week 14 and is expected to miss the start of the season.
Seen as a top-10 talent, Nkemdiche concerned NFL teams when he was arrested on drug charges in December of 2015 after falling out of a hotel window and was suspended from Ole Miss’ Sugar Bowl appearance.
In May, the Cardinals declined the fifth-year option on Nkemdiche’s contract for the 2020 season, making him an unrestricted free agent following this upcoming season.
