The Los Angeles Angels announced Monday that Tyler Skaggs, a pitcher for their organization the past six seasons, has passed away.

Skaggs was set to turn 28 next Saturday.

“It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas,” the Angels wrote in a statement on their Twitter account. “Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time.”

A cause of Skaggs’ death wasn’t immediately offered.

Monday’s game between the Angels and Rangers has been postponed.

The D-backs issued a statement from president and CEO Derick Hall.

“We are heartbroken with this tragic news,” it said. “Tyler began his Major League career as a Diamondbacks and he will always be remembered here as a great teammate and wonderful young man. His family is in our thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.”

The California native was drafted in the first round by the Angels in 2009. He was traded to the Diamondbacks in July of 2010 along with Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez and Joe Saunders in exchange for Dan Haren.

Skaggs pitched 13 big league games for the D-backs in 2012 and 2013 before going back to the Angels in 2013. It was in that trade that Skaggs was part of a three-team deal that brought Mark Trumbo to the Valley and sent Adam Eaton to the White Sox.
