The Arizona Diamondbacks had a participant in Monday night’s home run derby, and better yet, he won the whole thing. It was just done at the minor-league level, not in the major league one that took place the same evening.

Reno Aces outfielder and Diamondbacks farmhand Yasmany Tomas won the Triple-A Home Run Derby on Tuesday in El Paso, the home of the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

Tomas defeated Mike Ford of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in the final round to take the cake with 19 home runs.

Other participants in the derby were Brandon Barnes, Ryan McBroom, Travis Demeritte, Jorge Mateo, Roberto Ramos and Ty France.

Tomas, 28, has spent all of this season with Triple-A Reno and has hit 25 home runs, which is second in the Pacific Coast League behind only his teammate, Kevin Cron (29). Tomas is also hitting .309 with a .959 OPS and 67 RBI in 86 games.

The Havana, Cuba, native spent three seasons with the D-backs from 2015 to 2017, hitting .268 over those three years with 48 home runs and 163 RBI in 305 games. He hasn’t played an MLB game since June 2, 2017.

The Diamondbacks’ big league club didn’t have a participant in the MLB Home Run Derby on Monday night, which saw a final between Blue Jays rookie Vlad Guerrero Jr. and the eventual winner, Mets rookie Pete Alonso. The D-backs will, however, be represented in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game by second baseman and center fielder Ketel Marte, who will bat eighth and start at second base for the National League.
