Mercury’s Brittney Griner named WNBA All-Star starter

The Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner on Thursday was named a starter for this year’s WNBA All-Star game.
Starters were selected based on the 10 players who received the most votes from around the league. The Washington Mystics’ Elena Delle Donne and the Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson received the most votes from current players, fans and media, making them team captains.
As captains, Delle Donne and Wilson will draft the remaining 12 reserves as selected by the league’s head coaches.
Griner picks up her sixth straight All-Star nod, one for each season she’s played in the WNBA.
The 6-foot-9 center currently leads the WNBA in scoring with 20.0 points per game and has recorded the third most blocks per game with 2.15. She is also top-10 in turnovers per game with 2.85.
Her aggressive style of play recently helped her become the third player in WNBA history to record 600 career blocks, this after becoming the fastest player to reach 400.
Griner, a product of Baylor, also has more career regular season dunks (10) than any player in the WNBA combined (six) over the last 22 seasons.
Joining her as the other All-Star starters are Las Vegas’ Liz Cambage, the Seattle Storm’s Natasha Howard, the Connecticut Sun’s Jonquel Jones, the Los Angeles Sparks’ Chelsea Gray, Seattle’s Jewell Loyd, Las Vegas’ Kayla McBride and the New York Liberty’s Kia Nurse.
Delle Donne will be selecting the first pick of the first round (starters) while Wilson will draft the first pick of the second round (reserves).
The WNBA All-Star game will be played Saturday, July 27, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
