Phoenix Rising FC confirmed Monday that Liverpool FC defender Corey Whelan would be heading stateside to join the USL club, pending ITC and league approval.
Whelan was the captain of Liverpool’s U23 team.
“I’m really happy to get the deal over the line and can’t wait to get started,” Whelan said in a press release. “I’m excited to get there now and meet the lads, staff, supporters and the people of Phoenix. I’m looking forward to a new challenge and new chapter.”
The Athletic reported that the deal will be for multiple years.
The 21-year-old was on loan last season with Crewe Alexandra in England’s Sky Bet League Two, where he played 1,369 minutes in 16 games with a goal and two assists.
“We are excited to add a young player of Corey’s quality as we move into the second half of the season,” Rising FC GM Bobby Dulle said in the release. “At just 21 years old, Corey possesses the qualities we look for in our players. His experiences with Liverpool and ability to play multiple positions will help strengthen our already talented group of players.”
Rising FC has won nine consecutive matches and will look to make it 10 this Friday against Austin Bold FC.
