Grand Canyon University’s vice president of athletics Mike Vaught resigned Tuesday afternoon for an opportunity in the private sector.

The resignation is effective Aug. 12.

Vaught was hired in 2014 to help oversee the school’s transition from Division II to Division I. The Lopes earned back-to-back WAC Commissioner’s Cups for being the top-performing athletic program in the conference during his time with the school, and also earned the 2017-18 WAC Academic Excellence award, which was awarded to the conference’s top-performing school academically.

“GCU would like to thank Mike for nearly five years of service at the University,” GCU President Brian Mueller said in a press release. “In a time of significant growth University-wide, Mike oversaw the athletic department’s successful transition to NCAA Division I status and an expansive facilities enhancement project. We wish him and his wife Karri the best.”

Former deputy athletic director and senior woman administrator Jamie Boggs will be the interim VP. She previously was the sport administrator for the school’s baseball and men’s soccer teams and has been with the school since 2015.

Boggs also is a member of GCU’s University Diversity Council, Athletic Advisory Board and Title IX Committee. She also represents the WAC conference on the NCAA D-1 Council and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee.
