Former Cardinals safety Tre Boston signs one-year deal with Panthers

Former Arizona Cardinals safety Tre Boston will be returning to his former team after signing a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Boston signed with the Cardinals in late July last season and had to wait patiently again in 2019 for a new contract.

He signed a 1-year deal each of the last two seasons with his most recent contract reportedly worth $3 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

His deal last year with Arizona was for $1.475 million but paid out an extra $1.2 million in incentives, according to Spotrac.com.

Last year, Boston started 13 games for Arizona recording three interceptions, nine pass breakups and 79 tackles.

He has 11 career picks and one career touchdown with five of the interceptions coming as a member of the Chargers in 2017 and his lone score with the Panthers in 2014.

According to the Panthers, Boston is tied for third among all safeties with eight interceptions over the last two seasons.

Boston built familiarity with former Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks when the two were both with the Panthers from 2014 to 2016 and was a key contributor to  Wilks’ three-safety defense in 2018 with Arizona.

The return to Carolina also brings Boston closer to his college roots after playing four seasons with UNC and earning All-ACC second team honors in 2013.

The Cardinals added rookie safeties Deionte Thompson out of Alabama and Jalen Thompson out of Washington State and picked up veteran D.J. Swearinger as a waiver addition late last season, leaving Boston as the odd man out.

Last season, Boston had voiced his displeasure with Arizona before signing with the team saying that the Cardinals “rolled out the red carpet for me but the offer was very, very disrespectful.”
