The trade the Diamondbacks and Astros made yesterday that sent Zack Greinke to Houston could easily be described as a “splash.”
It was a big deal, one that capped off the MLB trade deadline day that had otherwise been described as relatively boring.
Of course, any time a team trades a player of that significance, one would think that club is getting something significant in return, and so far, it seems like the D-backs are. Four prospects — pitcher Corbin Martin, first baseman Seth Beer, pitcher J.B. Bukauskas and utility player Joshua Rojas — came back to Arizona in the trade.
A high-ranking official within an American League organization gave 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro his thoughts on the four prospects the D-backs received.
Here’s what he said:
RHP Corbin Martin
Awesome make-up player with a chance to be a solid rotation piece. ‘Yes sir, no sir’ type with four pitches. He had Tommy John surgery but has high-end fastball and secondary pitches. His issue has been that he doesn’t miss a lot of bats but his stuff is good.
RHP J.B. Bukauskas
A right-hander with stuff and marginal command and control. A lot of people think he’s a reliever but his slider is his calling card. That typical five-inning, 100-pitch guy who flashes stuff. He’s 6-foot tall or below so he’s always been questioned. First-rounder with talent but not sure how to use it yet.
1B/OF Seth Beer
Can really hit but he’s limited defensively. Funky swing but will hit in the big leagues with some power. Great kid and easy to root for. Probably a first baseman or DH only, but has played a little outfield. Power is good.
UTL Joshua Rojas
Sort of a breakout prospect this year. Left-handed bat and can move around the field. Didn’t show great feel for defense in the spring, but apparently he’s broken out in the minors. Maybe you get a Ben Zobrist, Marwin Gonzalez type player, maybe you just get a utility left-handed bat. Interesting guy that grows on you. Seems like a good kid from what I know.
