NHL goalie Eddie Lack joins ASU hockey’s coaching staff

Aug 14, 2019, 6:15 PM

NHL goaltender Eddie Lack announced on Twitter Wednesday he will be joining Arizona State’s hockey staff as the goalie coach.

Lack did not officially retire in the statement but noted that he is physically unable to play professional hockey at this time. He cited hip issues, which he will continue to rehab as he works with Arizona State.

ASU hockey coach Greg Powers spoke with The Athletic’s Craig Morgan on the addition of Lack to the staff.

Eddie started coming to some games last season during his rehab as he bought a house here in the Valley and we just really clicked. When we promoted our goalie coach to Operations Director Eddie and I met.

I really liked his demeanor and approach. We want to expose our players to good humans above all and Eddie is exactly that. He will make all of us better

An undrafted goaltender, Lack was signed by the Canucks in 2010, but while dressing for the Canucks and practicing with them in emergency situations, he wouldn’t make his NHL debut until October of 2013.

Serving in a goalie duo for nearly all of his career, Lack started 72 games over two seasons in Vancouver as a backup from 2013-15, sporting an impressive goals against average under 2.50 in both seasons. In 2015, Lack filled in for an injured Ryan Miller and started four playoff games, including one win.

Lack was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015, where he once again served as a backup and started 49 games over two seasons.

In 2017, Lack was traded to the Calgary Flames, who later traded him to the New Jersey Devils that season. He last played in February of 2018.
