ASU DB Terin Adams to transfer, Herm Edwards talks hand claps

TEMPE, Ariz. — Not one but two Arizona State Sun Devils are taking their talents elsewhere.

Redshirt junior defensive back Terin Adams joins redshirt senior wideout John Humphrey as the latest ASU players planning transfers out of the program.

“He’s going to transfer, I want to say to Utah State. I believe that’s the landing spot for him,” head coach Herm Edwards said after practice Monday. “It’ll be good for him. We had a nice conversation, he went out with the guys on the off night for dinner.

“We wish him well and he’s a good player, it’s just a lot of competition back there.”

With the influx of young talent fighting for reps, playing time could be scarce for Adams in 2019, who recorded 30 total tackles, 3.0 for loss, and a pass defensed in the team’s 13 games played last season.

“Guys figure it out. They look at it and go, ‘they recruited some guys in here and maybe I don’t fit,'” Edwards said. “Not saying we’re trying to run seniors off because we’re not, but they know that they can’t make it close because we’re trying to build a program.

“We’re going to build it with young guys, and we’re going to build it with seniors too. We want all our seniors to be good players, we want them to play, we want them to graduate, we want to have a winning season for them.”

But while Edwards and the Sun Devils focus in on the now, the team has to remain vigilant in finding ways to build toward the future.

“We want to accomplish great things with them, … but it’s our job to always, when it comes to recruiting, to upgrade our roster at all positions and we’re going to do that,” Edwards added. “If we don’t do that we fail this university and we fail this football team. That’s what we’re supposed to do. And we’re going to do it.”

Edwards sees two sides to hand-clap talk

Tab Edwards as the most recent person to give their two cents on the hand-clapping controversy that’s surrounded the Arizona Cardinals since their preseason game on Thursday.

“I think it caught him by surprise a little bit, but that’s what you have preseason for,” Edwards said when asked about Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and the false starts caused by hand claps. “[Kliff Kingsbury] is a good coach and he’ll get it corrected and Kyler will get it corrected, they’ll function.”

Edwards, however, understands both sides of the coin to all the talk being a former media member and current head coach.

“Things like that make the news, they create a conversation,” Edwards said. “And when [the media’s] in [its] world, and I was in that world, you need headlines … I get it, I sat in that chair.

“The great thing about it is it can be fixed. No big deal, it’s not that big of a deal. On the other side of it … the other side’s laughing going ‘all right man, we’ll get it we’ll fix it. No big deal.’ You can fix it in five seconds, it’s a fixable deal.”

“John’s really been a great guy to have on the team, his problem is he hadn’t been healthy. He got hurt in the spring, didn’t participate, and then he got hurt again before we went to camp, couldn’t participate. So it’s almost going on two years now.

“He hadn’t really practiced a lot, and so I think what he’s looked at too is like there’s this flux of new wide receivers coming in, young guys. And not saying he wouldn’t play, his whole problem is injury, he’s not available. I understand he wants (to) go play and go play somewhere, and hopefully he can stay healthy. He’s a talented player and we wish him nothing but well.”

— Edwards on getting more practices in during the daytime:

“A little warm today, but we told the players, ‘Hey look this how we function and we want to see who can function in the heat.’ I thought they did a pretty good job actually. I thought it was a crisper practice.”
