The Arizona Diamondbacks have been without one of their star players for portions of this season, but it now appears that he’ll be absent from play for the remainder of the year.

D-backs outfielder David Peralta, who hit the IL on Saturday with right AC joint inflammation, will miss the rest of the 2019 season as he has elected to undergo surgery on his shoulder, manager Torey Lovullo told Burns & Gambo on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.

“David has elected to have surgery on his right shoulder,” Lovullo said Tuesday. “I don’t know many of the details, I don’t know exactly what the diagnosis is, or what the surgical procedure will be. But we’ll go ahead and make it official, that his 2019 season is over because he’s elected to take care of that shoulder and get himself ready for spring training next year.”

Our own John Gambadoro provided some details on the surgery and recovery time on Tuesday night.

“An update on the David Peralta shoulder injury. The surgery he will have is considered a simple surgery and the time frame for recovery is approximately 6 weeks – give or take a week,” Gambadoro said in a tweet.

Peralta, 32, has gone on the IL three separate times this year. He’s managed to appear in 99 of the D-backs’ 132 games, hitting .275 with 12 home runs and 57 RBIs in that time, along with an .804 slugging percentage.

The 2019 Silver Slugger Award winner will be missed by a D-backs outfield that, at the moment, includes Jarrod Dyson, Adam Jones, Tim Locastro and Ketel Marte.

The last time Peralta returned from the IL, on July 24, he said that he tried to come back from his first of three IL stints this season too quickly.

“I just wanted to help the team, and I learned from that mistake,” he said at the time.

Lovullo said the team doesn’t expect the surgery to hinder Peralta’s ability to be ready for next year’s spring training.
