The Heart and Hustle award was created by the MLBPAA in 2005. The award is presented annually to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and embodies the spirit, traditions and value of the game.
Ahead of announcing the finalist, a player from each team is selected by MLBPAA committees for their passion, work ethic, and desire both on and off the field. Of the 30 finalists, fans and all MLB Alumni and active players vote on the final winner.
Last season, Boston Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts took home the award.
Prior to Escobar’s nomination last year, former D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt received the nomination for five years in a row.
