Although the first two seasons in the desert haven’t gone to plan for Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Steven Souza Jr., he seems to have a positive attitude about where things can go from here.

Taking swings off the tee in a photo posted on Twitter, Souza thanked his surgeon, family and other staff members for their role in his recovery from reconstructive knee surgery in April.

In late August, Souza was seen by manager Torey Lovullo ahead of his recovery schedule.

“I caught him running on a treadmill about 10 days ago and he wasn’t supposed to, and I was like, ‘What are you doing? Get off of the treadmill,’” Lovullo said. “But he felt that good. So I think there’s very limited forward running right now.”

A career .233 hitter, Souza had a career year in 2017 with the Tampa Bay Rays when he blasted 30 home runs and 78 RBI in 148 games.

In 2018, Souza battled a pectoral muscle injury which limited him to just five home runs in 72 games played.

Souza was traded to the Diamondbacks in a three team deal which sent Brandon Drury to the Yankees in February 2018.

He signed a one-year deal with the team in 2019 for $4.1 million. In 2020 he will be eligible for his third year of arbitration.
