ASU baseball’s Spencer Torkelson has power. Probably enough to hit a baseball from Phoenix to Flavortown.
Celebrity chef and TV personality Guy Fieri, the charismatic, bleached-hair sporting, sunglasses-wearing, self-proclaimed “Mayor of Flavortown” tweeted out an image of a cover of Baseball America, a magazine that featured Torkelson on its cover. The cover read, “New Age Slugger,” with the subhead, “Teams no longer shy away from righthanded first basemen– not if they mash like Team USA top prospect Spencer Torkelson.”
Fieri tweeted the image with the caption, “Congrats to my buddy Spencer. Keep an eye on this guy. He’s gonna go big!”
It wasn’t immediately clear how Torkelson and Fieri know each other, or whether Torkelson’s oppo-taco power rivals the tacos Fieri can cook up in the kitchen. But we do know that Torkelson saw the post, because he retweeted it on his own Twitter account.
Congrats to my buddy Spencer. 👏🏼

Torkelson, currently a junior at ASU, just wrapped a sophomore season in which he finished tied for fifth in all of NCAA baseball in home runs with 23, just four behind the national leader, Vanderbilt’s J.J. Bleday. Torkelson and his teammate, Hunter Bishop (22 home runs), finished first and second in the Pac-12, respectively, in home runs.
In 2018, Torkelson won Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and was an All-Conference First Team Selection.
As a freshman, Torkelson set the school record for home runs by a freshman with 25. The previous record was 11 — set by Barry Bonds.
