Could Cards win the division with Peterson and Bulger?

Apr 29, 2011, 7:03 PM | Updated: 8:30 pm

With the selection of Patrick Peterson, the Cardinals immediately improved their defense with potentially the best player on the board.

However, many pundits are scratching their heads with how a cornerback will improve the most important position and biggest question mark for the Cardinals in 2010, quarterback.

ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd didn’t have those questions and said on his show Friday he believes the Cardinals could win the NFC West with Peterson and current Ravens backup passer Marc Bulger.

“When you look at [Cardinals coach Ken] Whisenhunt and what he has done, that Matt Leinart thing burned him,” Cowherd said. “He’s gun-shy.”

Cowherd continued.

“So instead they go out and get the best player in the entire draft in my opinion, Patrick Peterson, to upgrade their defense and their special teams. Now he goes and gets Marc Bulger, don’t be shocked if they win the division.”

Bulger has been linked with a move to Arizona and reports surfaced Thursday he already has an “understanding” with the Cardinals.

However, even with the addition of a presumed shutdown corner, there is a clear understanding in the NFL today that you can only go so far without a quarterback, like maybe five wins.

Regardless, the addition of Peterson and Bulger could be a great tandem to carry the Cardinals to a better record in 2011.
