As the Arizona Cardinals await the return of defensive backs Patrick Peterson and Robert Alford, they’ve added another cornerback in Trevor Williams who has recently missed time.
The team claimed Williams off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday. Williams had been on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury.
In a corresponding move, they released punter Ryan Winslow, who they signed recently while incumbent punter Andy Lee dealt with a hip injury.
Williams, 26, attended Penn State and signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Chargers in 2016. He has played 37 games since then with 100 tackles — four for loss — with three interceptions, 23 passes defensed and a fumble recovery.
In 2017, Williams played all 16 games and had two interceptions with 54 tackles, two for loss. He had 13 passes defensed that season.
He has yet to play in 2019. Last year, he played only nine games, making seven starts and recording 23 tackles.
The Cardinals also re-signed running back Justin Davis to the practice squad. Davis, 23, played 11 games last year for the Rams.
