Local wide receiver recruit Brenden Rice announced his commitment to Colorado on Tuesday, picking the Buffaloes over Arizona State.

Rice is a three-star recruit (according to ESPN and 247Sports) from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, and is the son of the NFL’s all-time leading receiver Jerry Rice.

As a junior in high school, he caught 49 passes for 729 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

This year, his third on varsity, he has continued to be the Huskies’ top target and has improved his yards per catch average from 14.9 to 16.1.

He has good size at 6-foot-2, 204 pounds and has been a nightmare at the high school level to tackle in the open field.

247Sports recruiting analyst Blair Angulo talked about Rice’s upside and necessary improvements in his scouting report.

Good length and physical upside. Impressive straight-line speed. Can make defenders miss in the open field. Athleticism to high-point the football and body up defensive backs. Contributes as a run blocker and can be an asset on short-yardage situations. Could refine overall fluidity, particularly in getting out of his breaks. Decent hands, but room for improvement as consistent pass-catcher. Potential multi-year starter at Power Five level.

While Rice didn’t commit to ASU, the Sun Devils still have two wideouts in the 2020 class.

The other two are Chad Johnson Jr., another son of a former NFL star and a four-star recruit according to multiple sites, and Caine Savage, a speedster from Anaheim, California.

Elijhah Badger is another strong prospect possibility for 2020 (four stars on multiple sites). On 247Sports’ Crystal Ball (predicts where recruits will commit), it gives him a 67% chance of committing to ASU.

Add in that four-star halfback DeaMonte Trayanum already committed and the incoming offensive arsenal for 2020 is looking dynamic.

For 2021, receiver Alonzo Fontenette has committed as a top-50 recruit at his position in the country, according to ESPN.

Plus, Agiye Hall, the number one receiver recruit in the country for 2021 (according to 247Sports), tweeted a list of his top seven choices. This included Alabama, Clemson, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Georgia and ASU.

True freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels has already shown a lot of promise in year one, and has led the Devils to a stout 5-1 record. With the weapons coming in and the potential top prospects that could commit in the near future, the Sun Devil offense could be especially scary by the time Daniels is a junior.
