TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds could miss “a few weeks” after suffering a hamstring injury Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, a source of NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero told the reporter.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said the team is “not at that point yet” of downgrading Edmonds for the team’s Thursday game against the San Francisco 49ers or the following game, a visit to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“Doubtful for this week,” Kingsbury said. “If it was a normal week, possibly (Edmonds could play), but short week looks doubtful.”

Edmonds has 295 rushing yards and is averaging 5.1 yards per carry this season. Arizona’s backup back also made the last two starts as fellow running back David Johnson has dealt with an injured ankle.

Johnson is also reportedly expected to miss the Cardinals’ game Thursday against the 49ers. He is still day-to-day and hoping to make progress, Kingsbury said.

Edmonds’ and Johnson’s apparent unlikelihood of playing led to Arizona trading a conditional draft pick on Monday to acquire running back Kenyan Drake from the Miami Dolphins.

Against the 49ers, Drake is expected to earn carries ahead of last week’s running back additions, Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris, provided that duo remains on the roster as Johnson, Edmonds and third-stringer D.J. Foster (hamstring) recover from their respective injuries.

After the Cardinals host the Niners on the short week, they will visit the Buccaneers and then head to San Francisco in the next two weeks of the season before reaching a bye.

Arizona (3-4-1) currently ranks 14th in the NFL by averaging 116.5 rushing yards per game and ninth at 4.8 yards per carry.
