TEMPE, Ariz. — With a spectacular 57-yard touchdown pass to Frank Darby in the first quarter against No. 6 Oregon on Saturday, ASU football quarterback Jayden Daniels set a new record for most passing yards by a freshman in school history.

He surpasses Rudy Carpenter, who had 2,273 for the Sun Devils in 2005.

His pass tied the game at 7-7 with 4:55 remaining in the quarter. Arizona State went on to upset Oregon 31-28. Daniels finished the night completing 22-of-32 pass attempts for 408 yards and three touchdowns.

Daniels, the No. 2-rated dual-threat quarterback in the nation coming out of high school according to 247Sports, was a four-star recruit and has thus far had a successful start to his college career.

The San Bernardino, Calf. native won the starting quarterback job before the season, beating out fellow freshmen Joey Yellen and Ethan Long, as well as redshirt junior Dillon Sterling-Cole, who has since left the program.

Daniels passes Carpenter for the freshman passing yards record with still another game to go in the season, as the Sun Devils will face rival Arizona next weekend. What’s more, Daniels missed one game due to injury, so Yellen filled in against USC.

Daniels also entered Saturday’s game with 247 rushing yards this season. His 664 fourth-quarter passing yards were the ninth-most in the nation.

Coming into the weekend, 32 freshmen had played for the Sun Devils in 2019, which was tied for the third-most in the country. Of those, 21 were true freshmen. Eight true freshmen have started, the second-most in FBS football behind only Alabama.
