Year three of Herm Edwards on the recruiting trail is expected to be a success, even though his Arizona State Sun Devils enter the early National Signing Day period for the 2020 recruiting class without a defensive coordinator and having just installed a new offensive coordinator.
Danny Gonzales left his post leading ASU’s defense on Tuesday to officially take the New Mexico head coaching job. Edwards just named OC Zak Hill as Rob Likens’ replacement last week.
It isn’t expected to bite the Sun Devils, who went 7-5 this year to earn a Sun Bowl berth.
They entered Wednesday morning ranked 48th in the nation based on their known verbal commitments, according to 247 Sports, and that was expected to rise, possibly into a top-25 class by the end of the day. Arizona State got a big jump toward that possibility early Wednesday, when receiver and Oregon commit Johnny Wilson, the 89th-ranked player in the country, flipped to ASU.
Down in Tucson, Arizona Wildcats head coach Kevin Sumlin enters his third season as well.
But the Wildcats, who went 4-8 last season, have not been doing well on the recruiting trail, coming into National Signing Day 69th in the 247 Sports team class rankings. Like Edwards, Sumlin is also attempting to land commits with coaching staff turnover.
Sumlin fired DC Marcel Yates and several more defensive assistants in the middle of the season. Arizona has yet to find a permanent replacement for Yates.
Below is a running tab of which 2020 football recruits have sent in their national letters of intent to the Sun Devils and Wildcats.
