Cardinals stadium to host high school football showdown

The NFL may be in the middle of a lockout, but football will still be played at the University of Phoenix stadium this fall.

The Sollenbeger Classic, a game that pits some of Arizona’s top high school football programs against other strong schools around this country, will be played at the Cardinals’ stadium in Glendale, thanks to a recent intervention by the NFL team.

The event was originally scheduled to take place at Northern Arizona University’s Skydome, but the Arizona Interscholastic Associated was informed that the facility would be unavailable. The host organization was left scrambling to find a location until the Cardinals stepped in and offered their stadium.

The AIA and Cardinals reached an agreement Friday, strengthening an already solid relationship between the two organizations.

This year’s Classic, the sixth annual, will feature two high school football games for the first time in the event’s history. Defending champions 3A Show Low and 5A-II Chaparral will face off against Moapa Valley and Bishop Gorman, respectively. Both visiting schools are from Nevada.

The Sixth Annual Sollenberger Classic, which will kick off the Arizona high school football season, will be played August 20.
