Kevin Sumlin has hired veteran assistant coach Stan Eggen as the Arizona Wildcats defensive line coach, the schools announced Monday.
Eggen spent 2015-19 with the New Mexico Lobos at the same position. He will serve under new defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads, who worked with Eggen at Iowa State from 2013-14.
Eggen has 40 years of college experience — he began coaching at North Dakota in 1979 — and has coached a long list of defensive players that made it to the NFL, including Michael Bennett, Von Miller, Red Bryant and Antwan Odom.
Arizona fired defensive line coach Iona Uiagalelei on Nov. 21 among a series of changes on the defensive side of the ball.
Uiagalelei’s firing was the third of a defensive assistant coach last season. Wildcats defensive coordinator Marcel Yates and linebackers coach John Rushing were relieved of their duties on Oct. 27.
Former Arizona great Chuck Cecil assumed the coordinator job in the initial shakeup by Sumlin after serving as a senior defensive analyst, while former UA linebacker Hank Hobson took over at the linebacker coaching opportunity. He was also an analyst.
