Senior Bowl: ASU’s Aiyuk out with medical issue; Benjamin weighs in

Arizona State receiver Brandon Aiyuk will not participate in the Senior Bowl this week after being red-flagged for medical reasons prior to the start of the NFL Draft scouting event.

According to SunDevilSource.com, the Sun Devils’ leading receiver in 2019 has a “minor hip issue” and will train with the expectation he can perform at ASU’s pro day and the NFL Draft Combine that runs from Feb. 23 to March 2.

Aiyuk had planned to play in Senior Bowl practices leading into the game on Saturday. He still went through media availability Tuesday in Mobile, Ala., and was measured.

He came in at 5-foot-11 and 3/4 inches, 201 pounds and with an impressive wingspan of 6-foot-9. He also had hands measuring at 10 inches, at the high end for his positions and in range for linemen, bigger quarterbacks and tight ends. Aiyuk was listed at 6-foot-1 and 206 pounds by ASU this year.

Still, the measurables are surely intriguing for scouts, who had already become fans of Aiyuk heading into the Senior Bowl.

According to the game’s executive director, Jim Nagy, many NFL scouts were already grading the ASU product higher than they did former Sun Devil teammate N’Keal Harry a year ago.

Harry, you’ll remember, went at the end of the first round of the 2019 draft.

While Aiyuk, who recorded 1,192 yards and 18.3 yards per catch last year, will not participate in the Senior Bowl, fellow Arizona State product Eno Benjamin will.

The running back who graduated early — hence his ability to attend the event after his junior year —  measured in at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds. That’s on the smaller side after he was listed by ASU as 5-foot-10 and 210 pounds for his junior season.

Benjamin produced 1,083 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground in 2019 while playing behind an inexperienced offensive line. He averaged 4.3 yards per carry.
