Sedona Red Recap: Diamondbacks fight through early loss of Bradley, beat Rockies

For the record, the Arizona Diamondbacks won Tuesday night, beating the Colorado Rockies, 12-5, in front of an announced crowd of 18,792 at Chase Field to even the series at a game apiece.

The victory snapped the D-backs season-high four-game losing streak and a five-game skid against the Rockies.

But it took a backseat to the health and well-being of starter Archie Bradley.

The 22-year-old right-hander took a Carlos Gonzalez line drive to his face with one out in the second inning.

Immediately, the D-backs training staff, manager Chip Hale, pitching coach Mike Harkey and all eight position players converged on the mound.

After several minutes Bradley was rolled over onto his back before eventually sitting up and then walking off the field under his own power, holding a towel to his face.

Bradley, according to trainer Ken Crenshaw, suffered “some small changes in the sinus cavity” but showed no symptoms of a concussion and will follow-up with the team’s ear, nose and throat specialist Wednesday.

Bradley left with the D-backs ahead 3-0 thanks to a season-best four consecutive hits in the first inning, capped by Mark Trumbo’s two-run triple.

Trumbo would add three more hits, including a two-run home run in the fifth, a ball that landed on the concourse in center field, 451 feet from home plate.

Trumbo finished a double shy of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Paul Goldschmidt added three hits and three RBI.

THE GOOD

Considering he threw 37 first-inning pitches his last time out, Bradley got off to a considerably better start, setting down the Rockies in order in the first.

He needed only 13 pitches, 10 of which were strikes, including a 93-mph fastball up in the zone that Corey Dickerson futilely chased for the first strikeout of the game.

Just two pitches into the home half of the first, A.J. Pollock ripped a 1-0 offering into center field for a base hit to extend his hitting streak to a career-best eight games. He took second when Charlie Blackmon had trouble fielding the ball cleanly.

Three pitches later, Goldschmidt sent the first offering he saw up the middle for a base hit, scoring Pollock for the first run of the game. The single extended a pair of Goldschmidt streaks against the Rockies: No. 1, a 13-game hitting streak at home, and No. 2, reaching base safely in 19 straight games — the third-longest streak by a D-back behind Luis Gonzalez (38 games) and Justin Upton (27).

Two pitches after that — still in the first — Trumbo hit a two-run triple into the gap in left-center field to put the D-backs up 3-0. It was Trumbo’s third three-bagger of the season, tying a career-high, and the 10th of his career.

Two different droughts are over. The first, David Peralta’s fourth-inning home run, was the D-backs’ first in five games (April 22 vs. Rangers, Chris Owings). The two-run shot also snapped an 0-for-12 hitless streak for Peralta, who has now hit safely in 11-of-14 career games against the Rockies, including a pair of homers.

The second was by Yasmany Tomas. With two outs in the seventh, in his 20th official at-bat of the season, he hit a run-scoring double to center field to make it a 9-4 ball game. It was his first extra-base hit and RBI of his big league career. Tomas has reached base safely in all five of his starts.

THE BAD

It doesn’t get much worse than seeing your top pitching prospect laying motionless in front of the mound for several minutes in the top of the second inning. According to MLB.com Gameday, the ball came off of Gonzalez’s bat at 115 miles per hour, tied for the seventh-highest batted ball velocity this season (via baseballsavant.com). Bradley had thrown 26 pitches, 18 for strikes, when he was forced out of the game.

Andrew Chafin entered in relief with runners on the corners and one out in the inning. After allowing an RBI single to D.J. LeMahieu to make it 3-1, he flirted with trouble in the third, leaving the bases loaded—though he did strike out the side—and then gave up two runs in the fourth. Chafin, who did earn his first career victory, has been scored upon in three of his last four appearances for an ERA of 10.50 (7 ER in 6.0 IP).

Only one D-backs player, Tuffy Gosewisch, failed to get a hit. The team recorded 15 hits, including a season-high eight extra-base hits, but none for Gosewisch who went 0-for-4 with two ground outs, a fly out and strikeout.

NOTED

Aaron Hill played in his 1,299th game. He went 1-for-4 with an infield hit in the eighth.

Oliver Perez retired the Rockies 1-2-3 in the seventh for his first clean inning since April 8.

Brad Ziegler retired the Rockies 1-2-3 in the eighth for his 10th straight scoreless outing.

Prior to the 12-run outburst, the D-backs had scored a total of six runs in the past four games.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim was among those in attendance, sitting with long snapper Mike Leach.

UP NEXT

The series and homestand closes out with a pair of right-handers — Josh Collmenter and Jordan Lyles — taking the mound on Wednesday, April 29.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 with pregame coverage beginning 30 minutes earlier on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.

Collmenter (1-3) sports a 2.70 ERA (6 ER in 20.0 IP) over his last three appearances. In his last time out, he recorded a quality start with three runs in six innings but was saddled with the loss, 4-1, to the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 24.

Collmenter is 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA in eight career starts against the Rockies.

Meanwhile, Lyles (2-1), in his second season in Colorado, is coming off a win and perhaps his best performance of the year. He allowed one run, scattering six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings against the San Diego Padres on April 23.

Lyles has faced the D-backs six times in his career, going 1-2 with a 6.46 ERA.
