Sedona Red Recap: D-backs provide ample run support for Collmenter in win over Rockies

PHOENIX — A day after seeing their top pitching prospect get hit in the face by a line drive — and just three days removed from the conclusion of a brutal, three-game sweep at the hands of the Pirates — the Arizona Diamondbacks bounced back by wrapping up a series win over the Colorado Rockies.

Paul Goldschmidt picked up three hits for the third consecutive game, Yasmany Tomas drove in a career-high three runs and Josh Collmenter picked up the win as Arizona defeated Colorado 9-1 in front of 19,633 at Chase Field on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks fell behind in the top of the first, when a bouncing ball handcuffed second baseman Chris Owings on what could have been the third out. The error extended the inning, allowing Nolan Arenado to drive in Troy Tulowitzki to give the Rockies an early 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take Arizona long to respond, though. Ender Inciarte singled to lead off the bottom of the first and Goldschmidt singled to left field two batters later. Both players advanced with steals and a Daniel Descalso error that scored Inciarte. Mark Trumbo then drove in Goldschmidt for his fifth RBI in the last two nights.

The Diamondbacks played small ball to manufacture some more scoring in the fifth, when Inciarte walked, Chris Owings laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him over and Goldschmidt coaxed a base on balls as well. Trumbo then moved both runners over with a deep drive to left, David Peralta got on via a walk and Tomas drove in two with a single to right. Jordan Pacheco then lifted an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left-center to blow the game open, with his first home run of the year.

Peralta came through with two huge defensive plays to preserve the lead in the sixth, and then doubled in the seventh. Tomas sliced a single to right to drive him in for his third RBI of the night — just one day after recording his first ever major league RBI.

Meanwhile, Collmenter cruised after allowing an unearned run in the first. It was his best outing of the year other than a complete-game shutout he tossed against the San Francisco Giants on April 17. When all was said and done, he scattered five hits over eight innings while striking out six. And, by all accounts, he could have finished things off in the ninth, if needed.

THE GOOD

Owings made a nice over-the shoulder catch on a Jordan Lyles liner in the second inning, and then fired to first to double Nick Hundley off. After that point, Collmenter was on cruise control.

Collmenter retired 12 in a row after allowing a leadoff single in the second. He faced the minimum in the second, third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

Peralta made the play of the game in the sixth, gunning down Corey Dickerson at home plate on a perfect throw from left that never touched the ground. Colorado challenged the play, claiming catcher Jordan Pacheco was in “violation of the collision rule” when he put the tag on Dickerson. The challenge was overruled, though.

One batter later, Peralta delivered another highlight-reel play, lunging to catch a long fly ball off the bat of Justin Morneau that would’ve scored Tulowitzki.

THE BAD

There wasn’t much “bad” in this game for Arizona, but the error in the first by Owings kept the inning alive, and gave the Rockies an early lead.

Tomas began the game by hitting into two double plays. Both killed potentially big innings, as the first came with runners on second and first and one out, and the second was wedged between a walk and two singles in what ultimately turned out to be a scoreless fourth. He responded in a big way later, though, with two RBI in the fifth and another in the seventh.

STAT OF THE GAME

20: Number of RBI that Goldschmidt has in the month of April – two behind the Major League lead

HE SAID IT

“Apparently, that’s what we need to do for me to pitch well, I guess, is have the bullpen run down. So, maybe they can all throw a bullpen session before I pitch next.” – Collmenter on pitching a night after the Diamondbacks went deep into their bullpen.

NOTED

• The Diamondbacks have now scored 21 runs over their last two games. To put that in perspective, they had 21 over their previous eight outings.

• Since April 25, 2013, the Diamondbacks are 9-0 against the Rockies in games where Collmenter makes an appearance.

• Trumbo now has five hits, three home runs and 13 RBI in 15 career at-bats against Lyles.

• Trumbo went 7-for-12 with a homer, four runs scored and five RBI over has last three games.

• Trumbo has also reached base safely in 16 consecutive games against Colorado. Goldschmidt has done it 20 straight times.

• Goldschmidt has at least one hit in nine of Arizona’s 10 wins this season.

• Nine different Diamondbacks picked up hits in the game.

• One night after going a combined 11-for-17 with two home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs scored, Arizona’s 3-6 hitters went 7-for-14 with five RBI and five runs scored.

• RHP Enrique Burgos made his major league debut, pitching a scoreless ninth. He was recalled from Double-A Mobile before the game when Archie Bradley was placed on the 15-day DL.

• Aaron Hill played in his 1,300th major league game, pinch-hitting for Collmenter in the eighth.

UP NEXT

The Diamondbacks get Thursday off before opening a three-game set with the first-place Dodgers in Los Angeles on Friday. That kicks off Arizona’s second road trip of the season — one that includes three games in Colorado next week (May 4-6).

Rubby De La Rosa (2-1) will make his fifth start of the season Friday, opposing Dodgers righty Carlos Frias. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with pregame coverage on Arizona Sports 98.7 starting 30 minutes earlier.

De La Rosa looked much better in his last outing, scattering four hits and one run over seven innings against Pittsburgh on Saturday. That dropped his ERA to 4.68 on the year — a number he’s been working down since a rough outing to start the season, in which he allowed six runs over 5.1 innings against the Giants.
De La Rosa began his MLB career with Los Angeles in 2011.

Frias will be making just his third major league start, and his first of the season. He’s struck out two and allowed two hits over 2.1 innings of relief work so far. It will be the second time he’s ever faced Arizona.
