The Phoenix Suns announced on Monday they have waived guard Tyler Johnson, a move first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday.

Johnson’s use in the rotation has been sporadic this year. After losing almost all playing time in early December, he played six of seven games from Jan. 1 through Jan. 14.

He has only appeared in three of 13 games since and was inactive with a calf injury the last four.

Johnson, whose contract this year was more than $19 million, was expected to be used as salary cap filler in a potential trade. However, the Phoenix Suns did not make any moves at the trade deadline, which was on Thursday. Johnson remained on the team.

In 31 appearances this year, Johnson averaged 5.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 16.6 minutes per game.

Johnson was acquired by the Suns around the trade deadline last season in exchange for Ryan Anderson. He played well in his 13 appearances, averaging 11.1 points, 4.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds in 31.2 minutes per game.

However, a knee injury ended his 2018-19 season prematurely.

This year, he could not find footing in head coach Monty Williams’ rotation.

Wojnarowski said he will become an unrestricted free agent after clearing waivers and the Suns will open a roster spot.
